Unused alcove on floor 6?

Anyone else notice an alcove opposite the entrance of the hall of fire that is unused?

I've double checked on my second playthru and its not used in any way, am I missing a secret from it?

Tried the red gem, didn't notice anything obvious

You mean the alcove in the wall that had the 'Westernmost' scroll in it?

That's in a different area, technically on 7 iirc. He means the one directly opposite Halls of Fire, it never has anything in it.

Indeed Drax, the westernmost scroll was found down the pit.
Gamebanshee didn't have anything on it either from what I could tell of their walkthru - and their secrets page.

Tried the red gem, tried the green gem, tried them both, tried various weapons I had on me, armour, food, torches, bits of materials for potions. Didn't notice anything. Though if it opened up something on the other side of the level, I probably wouldn't.

I'm going with it's an unused asset until someone more patient than I figures it out.

There's also that empty sconce on Goromorg Temple level 1

I think the westernmost is referring to a pit to fall in from the floor above (where the timed puzzle is). Falling into that pit leads to a treasure.
