Lately I've been getting into this wonderful game again and I've been paying attention to some great new modifications like "Xeen Chronicles", "Lemuria", "Generation of Kings" and others. All these modifications use a huge amount of resources in the .dat file, because of which on Windows 10 the old 32-bit LoGII game engine can't handle the load and the game crashes while saving progress.
I have tried many ways to solve this problem... From various utilities to distribute the load on the CPU to homemade patches to improve the performance of the game. Nothing helped, the game still crashes... And it is always more pleasant to play with high quality textures than with medium or low, isn't it?
And then, unexpectedly, I came across a utility called dgVoodoo, which I used for a very, very long time ago for one very, very old Windows 98 game.
You can't imagine my surprise when after several attempts to set it up, the crashes during saves in Grimrock stopped.
So, what can be done...
1. Download the current version of dgVoodoo from the https://dege.fw.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/ website. Right now it is stable version 2.85. Extract the files into the folder with the game, as shown in the screenshot. And I noticed that this works equally well on both the Steam version and the GOG repack. You need to unpack the libraries D3D8.dll, D3D9.dll, D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll from the x86 folder of dgVoodoo archive. You also need to copy the files Glide.dll, Glide2x.dll and Glide3x.dll to the root folder with the game.

After all manipulations I set the texture quality in the game to maximum and now I've been playing for almost ten hours enjoying ‘Xeen Chronicles’ at maximum textures settings without crashing, making saves almost every three or four minutes.
Give it a try. Maybe this method will help you too!
Happy hunting!
