Dying.

Post by hefa »

Hi.

I just survived an encounter with only my minotaur fighter left alive. Although I was happy that I got though the tight spot I also wondered why the dungeon was still lit. The torch was on my dead mage and it still provided light. I was also able to change the torch in to a new one while travelling to a resurrection stone.

I'm not saying it is a bug, but it is curious.. I think that you should not be able to access dead party members inventories and you should not get aid from torches either.. I keep getting weird images of dead party members clinging to the only one left alive and dragging their equipment with them..

Is this really intended?

Heh my mage died so was unable to cast the light spell... Fortunately like you say he could still carry the torch! Maybe the surviving party members rope it to his hand! :P

I don't see why you can't access their inventories. They're dead, they're not going to stop you. :D

As far as carrying around dead people, it's not quite realistic but it would make for a terrible piece of gameplay. Unnecessary complication. Besides, do you know how much we minotaurs weigh? We're HUGE!

If you start worrying about the details like that, then you have to think about thinks like since you're chained together the encumbrance of the only live member should include having to carry the dead members and their gear. So you should have been stuck there.

I would say it's intended, the game is supposed to be fun. Worrying about that kind of thing wouldn't add to the fun of the game. If you wish to emulate that type of play, simply remove the torch from that dead guy and go on.

I brought it up because I was surprised about the behavior. I assumed that if my torch bearer died the dungeon would go dark until I add a new torch to someone alive. I was also expecting the dead to drop their items there on the ground, but they acted only as extended inventories.

But then again the game might become a bit too hard. ;) If the dead would loose all their equipment until you reclaim it back might be challenging if you haven't managed to kill the monsters first.

Indeed, that could be difficult then. Not a bad idea for a "super-hardcore" mode though. :-)

You failed to look at the T-Shirt Motto they had stenciled on:

"They'll take my torch when they pry it from my cold dead fingers!"

They died, the torch didn't

fortunately it is not like dungeon master, where all his stuff on the floor
btw. there is an (mage) item which will enlight the dungeon. i did not recognize it until i drop my torch for a new one and thought "hmm, where is that light coming from?"

Well, you have to give these sorts of issues a bit of creative licence... ;-) So your Minotaur is carrying the whole party with him; I guess he's tough enough.
I actually preferred the way DM did it, it made more sense and made it a much bigger deal if one of your party died.

Personally, I'm playing it as my surviving party member tied the torch to his friend's dead corpse then carried him to the nearest stone.

Voila, light.
