Gamebook Deja-vue

Post by Pip »

Ever since I first saw this game I've had a huge dose of deja-vue, not for the usual first person dungeon crawler games, but something from my childhood. It's been annoying me for months until I found what it was by total chance today..........

I could remember owning a gamebook back in the 80's, kind of like fighting fantasy but with hand drawn, first person views of a dungeon. Then I found it by accident, I'm not sure anyone here would be old enough to remember it, but the book was called 'Combat Heroes - White Warlord' by Joe Dever.

The first person views looked like this .......

You could play single player with this one book, exploring the small dungeon, or have 2 books, White Warlord and Black Baron which let you play a 2 player combat game.

If your interested in looking at them, the author has allowed them to be downloadable as PDF's at this site .....

It makes me wonder if someone could do something similar, but much more sophisticated on an e-reader today ?

Hey Pip,

Interesting stuff! I played many of Joe Dever's gamebooks, his Lone Wolf books being my favourites. You can actually play them online to, at the same website you mentioned. I played through several again a year or two ago and had a blast! :D

I must admit playing them on the internet is handy so you can click the back button should you end up taking a wrong turn and dying! ;)

For anyone interested, here's where you can find them. :)

Yep, I had these gamebooks. They were OK, but not great. I'm glad that dungeon crawlers came along!
