You can grind a few levels out. I am at the castle now and I am level 14 with no real grinding of any kind. But grinding for extra levels is only good until 17-18 as level 19 and beyond the xp curve bends so far it touches itself.

After being pointed out (I hadn't been in the Pyramid yet) Snake tails give 308xp at level 1 and the pie gives 440 at level 1.
