Hi, In the not too distant future I want to format my HD and do a clean install of my operating system, could anyone tell me if its possible to back up the save game files from LoG? Looked in the game directory but no luck.

Agree so much, just my personal opinion but for atmosphere, gameplay and faithful representation of "the good old days" this beats Skyrim hands down for me

On Bethesda's Skyrim forum a post was started about Legend of Grimrock, one of Bethesda's forum moderators posted a reply to it promoting it :D Awesome.
