Attacks also seem to consume some food (since they count as actions), therefore mages seem to need less food in general since they never perform actual attacks and energy regeneration is for free, or am i mistaken? But putting an archer in front row means that you have to fill the empty spot in the back row with yet another rouge. I don't think the engine suites any kind of turn based system. Problem is, that a turn based system needs to offer you far more informations about your enviroment and possible moves in order to create a decent challenge. I don't think explizit communication between levels would be required. Not as long you can simply use hidden rooms with teleporters, presure plates and preplaced rocks.
