Grimrock

I started a Mage with points in Ice spells. Unfortunately, I didn't find any scrolls for Ice for quite some time. Also, none of the symbols seemed to cast anything for the mage. Does it require the scroll to cast the spell? I think it would be beneficial to start mages with a basic spell scroll that...
