Is it possible to use previous patch versions with the Steam version? I think you can opt out of beta in the properties for this game in Steam, so you won't get those. You could then delete local files, and it would download the latest "Release" (not Beta) build of the game. I think you m...

Water reflections (that was just an example, but low settings seems not affecting it) LOD Draw distance Low version of object at distance (since Grimrock 2 is open world) These things are easy to implement and far easier than MT coding You're probably correct about that being easier. Not a bad list...

Of course I have no knowledge of LoG2's implementation or the details of how it works but my guess is that the graphics engine needs a decent amount of CPU cycles, and perhaps the CPU code for that is not easy to multi-thread. I love it. The developers have not rested on their laurels and created a true successor to Grimrock 1.

Do a Google search for this particular error. I've found a number of links that mention certain Viruses causing this, some Audio driver causing this. It looks like there's a lot of folks with this particular problem and the fix is not always the same.
