Actually, in Dungeon Master did it not do exactly the same thing? I know I tried it on the first stairs I came to just to see if they were DM style stairs

Have you tried editing grimrock.cfg, which is located in ...\documents\Almost Human\Legend of Grimrock?

Yep, I did that. Got down to level 2 before I realised why my mage wasn't able to cast any spells
